A hands-on technical business built from TowBars2U, practical experience and a shared interest in vehicles, electronics and doing jobs properly.
Where it started
From one car to a technical workshop.
TowBars2U was founded by Gordon McDonald in 2021, after the first COVID lockdown. The mobile nature of towbar fitting meant work could be carried out with relatively little customer contact, and the business initially operated from Gordon's own car before progressing to a van and independent fitting work for Witter Towbars.
Gordon had already spent years developing an interest in vehicles, electronics and technology, alongside training in electronics, computer domain administration and networking, and electrical inspection and testing.
Gordon & James
Two different backgrounds, one approach to the work.
Gordon and James Rigby first met through Maplin Electronics. James had qualified as a draftsman and built a long career with Maplin, progressing through shop fitting, sales, assistant management, store management and eventually area management.
After Maplin closed, James successfully ran Dalgety Bay Handyman. Gordon regularly helped on larger jobs, and after months of persuasion James joined Gordon in January 2023 to form JRGM Technical Services LLP.
Both partners remain directly involved in towbar fitting, trailer servicing, quotations, accounts, administration and customer calls.
Why “Technical Services”?
The business was always wider than towbar fitting.
Custom wiring and specialist electrical work were already developing before JRGM Technical Services LLP was formed.
Classic & custom wiring
Early work included electrical repairs on classic Volkswagens, a custom loom for a DTH show Beetle and planning for a specialist Mk1 Ford Zodiac build with Hamilton Racing. JRGMTS has since carried out complete VW camper looms and other classic and hot rod electrical work.
Trailer servicing
Trailer servicing was identified as a natural second path because it complemented towing and wiring. Gordon and James completed formal towbar and trailer servicing training, and early attempts at mobile servicing confirmed that a proper workshop was needed to achieve the standard they wanted.
Vehicle & leisure electronics
Today the workshop also handles vehicle electronics, trackers, cameras, infotainment upgrades and advanced 12V leisure systems, with Victron equipment favoured where suitable.
How we work
Do it properly, price it fairly, deal with problems properly.
That principle has been part of the business from the start. JRGMTS does not aim to be the cheapest option; the aim is fair mid-market pricing and work that represents good value.
The team
Hands-on people, not a faceless workshop.
The team has grown since 2023, while Gordon and James remain directly involved day-to-day.
Gordon founded TowBars2U in 2021 and later formed JRGM Technical Services LLP with James Rigby. He has long-standing interests in vehicles, electronics and technology, with training in electronics, computer domain administration and…
