Motorhome and campervan solar installation
JRGMTS installs solar charging systems for campervans and motorhomes, generally favouring Victron equipment where it suits the application. Solar can reduce dependence on hook-up and alternator charging by putting energy back into the leisure battery whenever usable daylight is available.
What is in a typical solar system?
- Solar panel(s)
- Roof mounting
- Weatherproof cable entry
- Solar cable and protection
- Solar charge controller
- Battery connection
- Optional monitoring
Equipment we commonly use
We regularly build solar and leisure systems around Victron equipment, including MPPT solar controllers and related monitoring, because it is equipment we know well. We are not tied to one manufacturer and can install other suitable equipment to match the customer’s specification, existing system or budget.
MPPT explained simply
An MPPT controller electronically finds an efficient operating point for the panel and converts the available solar power into the voltage/current needed to charge the battery.
How big a panel do I need?
It depends on roof space, battery capacity, time of year, shading and energy use. Scottish winter daylight is very different from summer daylight, so solar should be treated as one charging source rather than unlimited power.
Frequently asked questions
Will solar keep my battery charged all year?
It can contribute significantly, but winter generation is much lower than summer.
Can solar be added to an existing battery?
Usually yes, if the battery and system are suitable.
Do you fit Victron?
Yes, and generally favour it where appropriate.
